1. Why a solar geyser?
The solar geysers now being installed all over South Africa use solar radiation, the heat of the sun, to create energy. The solar geyser uses a “solar collector” in flat-plate or vacuum-tube format which is usually installed on the roof. The collector gets very hot very quickly and in turn heats yours water, either in a direct circulation system (in which the water runs through the collector and into the geyser tank) or in an indirect system (a special liquid flowing through the collector gathers the heat and transfers it to the geyser tank).Most solar geysers also have a back-up electric element that can be used on over-cast days, Eskom ‘s Andrew Etzinger says.

2. How a Solar geyser work?

3. How long should a Solar water geyser last?
Eskom says the expected life-span of a solar water heater is 10-20 years, depending on various factors. Some systems have a 10 year guarantee and a life expectancy of about 20 years. Etzinger says. 4. How hot is the water?
Most quality solar water heaters will hear water between 55 and 65 degrees Celcius, Eskom says. On a average cloudless day of solar radiation it will be 60 degrees plus, Ezinger says.

5. What happens when the sun doesn't shine?
Solar water heaters tanks are much better insulated than those of electric geysers and can therefore keep water hot longer, Eskom says. For occasions when the water temperature falls below the desired level most solar water heaters have a back-up electric element.
